The objective of the Research and Fisheries Resources Conservation Unit

To support the mandated vision of the Department of Fisheries in undertaking sustainable fisheries management to reach food fish security. Carrying out research activities related to fish industry for long-term sustainable development of fish processing.

The Research and Conservation Unit’s fisheries Research and Conservation Conducted are as follow:

(a)

Evaluate inland freshwater fisheries produces and the status of the resources. And then Stock assessment of fresh water species.

(b)

Evaluate Myanmar water and coastal region of marine fisheries produces and the status of the resources. And then stock assessment of Marine species.

(c )

Classification of freshwater and marine water fish and aquatic animals according to the zoological nomenclature system and Preservation of specimens by the Museum.

(d)

Discover and protect breeding or spawning grounds and nursery grounds of commercially important species.

Fisheries resource observation by the Dr.Fridtjof Nansen research vessel from September to November 1979.(1) Researched once; 1980 From March to April (1) 2013 (1)time ;    from November (13) to December (19) 2015 (1)once ; from April (25) to June (18) 2018 (1); from August (24) to September (29) *1);A total of (5) research operations have been completed in Myanmar Sea.

For the 2024-2025 in-shore waters to be researched, the Department has submitted to the Ministry to cooperate with the Tanintharyi Fisheries Federation (TRFF) to study the existence of fish resources and the spawning season in the water depth of 20 meters along the coast of Tanintharyi.

The status of Blood clam research activities

Blood clam species research started in December 2022 with the help of TRFF Fund in Myeik District's Kyun Su Township and Blood clam farm villages and natural spawning areas in Myeik Township and ended in March 2024. An instruction has been issued to require (120) Blood clam and 25 mm in size for (1) kg for overseas export. A dissemination workshop has been conducted for the preservation of blood clam spawning grounds. According to the results, to issue directives for (3) conservation areas where blood clam should not be captured at all is being carried out. The results of the blood clam research work will be compiled and a report will be published and information and education will be carried out for the benefit of the local communities.

Establishing fish conservation zones in collaboration with Indawgy local community themselves

 Fauna and Flora (FFI) is implementing inland conservation area projects in collaboration with the department of fisheries In the Indawgy region, since 2013, in collaboration with the local residents, fish studies have been carried out in the Indawgyi Lake and watershed areas, and a total of (6) fish conservation zones that meet the criteria have been selected together. In 2015, the head of Kachin State Fisheries Department designated a total of (6) conservation zones as official conservation zones.

In addition to those conservation zones (6) that meet the criteria,the  Namplang  Freshwater Turtle and Fish Conservation Area of Namplang Creek in “Mana khoL” Village has been submitted to the head of the State Fisheries Department in 2024 with comments from local and village administrators.

Establishment of fish conservation zones in Tanintharyi Region and Aya waddy Region

 FFI is implementing conservation projects in collaboration with the department of fisheries(DoF) and is supported Tanintharyi Government to establish Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) in Myeik Archipelago are (9972.668) total hectares. Community-based “La Ngan”   marine conservation area is (4491.668) hectares and “Done Pelal Aww”  marine conservation area is (4491.668) hectares and “Linn Lun” –“Pa law War: marine conservation area is (4491.668) hectares.

In 2024, the residents of (4) villages located on Dom Island in Tanintharyi Region will continue to officially recognize marine conservation areas by the Department of Fisheries. In addition, “Ayer waddy” Region, “Shwe Taung yan” (Ma Gyi), The Department of Fisheries will proceed to recognize the Marine conservation areas under the leadership of the local residents of the villages in “Do mal” and “Kan maw” Islands in Tanintharyi Region.
